CCLS METHODOLOGY
General description
The CCLS methodology has evolved during more than fifty years of teaching foreign languages to hundreds of thousands of students, from children to senior citizens, involving thousands of teachers who have used it successfully.
CCLS method will save you lots of time in preparing lessons plans, images, power point presentations and so on. 90% of the material that you are going to use in class are prepared for you, therefore you will have more time to spend with your family or at the pub.
It is based on the principles of the direct method, which emphasizes communication skills. CCLS has also incorporated techniques from several teaching approaches—from the structural and functional methods to the communicative approach—and then updated them for use with the latest electronic delivery systems. In short, the CCLS teaching system is a blend of the most effective techniques used in the best and most popular teaching methods; therefore, the CCLS method of instruction naturally lends itself to a diverse student population.
Our teaching technique focuses on conversation skills (speaking and listening/understanding) and places a premium on fluency and accuracy. Reading and writing are mainly developed through homework. It is CCLS’ belief that students should be exposed to a language in its oral form before the written form. Most students who speak a language with poor pronunciation usually do so because they had premature exposure to the written form of the target language. These students may also experience difficulty in understanding the target language spoken at a natural pace because their comprehension is too dependent on the written language.
CCLS has developed materials for children (from the age of 4), preteens, teens, adults, and professionals. Each series caters to the interests, goals, and needs of the age group they were designed for.
To help teachers understand and use the methodology, CCLS has created a comprehensive Lesson Plan book for every course in the program. These lesson plans standardize the classroom work and insure that all lesson presentations will be organized and complete. They also guide the teachers step‑by‑step through the teaching technique being used in the lesson.
Since the CCLS methodology and accompanying materials are used all over the world, occasionally, some instructors may not be as knowledgeable in teaching techniques or even as fluent in the target language as their peers in other countries. These teachers benefit greatly from our thorough Lesson Plans. Recordings of native speakers of the target language are used in the CCLS language programs. In this way, students are exposed to the accents of native speakers of the target language and are not totally dependent on their teacher’s accent. Resourceful and experienced teachers also enjoy our system because it greatly reduces their class preparation time. With materials preplanned, teachers can concentrate on other components of classroom success: on the dedication they bring to the classroom and on the life they give to the contents of the Lesson Plan.
The techniques used in the CCLS series vary, but most series present their contents by means of dialogs (accompanied by moving or still images) which reflect the students’ own real-life experiences. Video clips, TV commercials, magazine and newspaper articles are also used in several lessons. Some of the classroom activities include question-answer exercises, role playing, phonetic exercises, listening comprehension practice, structural drill practice, topic discussion, games, and songs.
Teaching resources include DVDs, lesson plans, flashcards (children’s program), and games. The student’s materials consist of books (textbook, workbook with CD, and listening comprehension practice book), and CDs with the audio recording of the lessons, reading texts and drill exercises for additional oral practice.
CCLS has also developed all the final exams for each level of instruction. The final exam consists of a listening comprehension test, a written test, and an oral test. The passing grade is 60 in each test.
CCLS provides its teachers with a class schedule for each program where they will take notes of the materials covered in each class. The class schedule also helps teachers pace their classes so they neither advance too fast nor fall behind schedule.
A teachers’ workshop in the CCLS method is offered by CCLS to facilitate their assimilation of our teaching techniques.
CCLS takes pride in offering its teachers the best teaching method and materials to help students achieve fluency and confidence when communicating in the target language.
The training given is not paid. The number of hours of training will depend on your dedication. It could vary from 10 to 20 hours. We also made available many resources online to help you get used to method quickly.
